Wero & Luxhub unlock a new means of payment in the EU
The European payments landscape is undergoing a major shift, driven by rising customer expectations and the need for seamless cross-border solutions. Already live in Belgium, France and Germany—and soon in Luxembourg and the Netherlands—, Wero is emerging as a leading new payment method in Europe.
Wero is an account-to-account digital wallet, created by EPI Company, and based on Sepa Instant Credit Transfer, offering a unified and sovereign alternative to fragmented domestic solutions. It supports peer-to-peer, peer-to-professional, e-commerce and point-of-sale payments, and is designed for easy use across borders. After only 12 months, Wero already counted more than 46 million registered users and over 110 million transactions, representing more than €7.5bn transferred. Luxembourg and the Netherlands will join the ecosystem in 2026, as the wallet expands toward additional use cases such as online checkout, in-store payments, subscriptions and loyalty programs.
For banks, integrating Wero means providing consumers with a modern, intuitive means of payment. It therefore rapidly became a strategic asset for banks. EPI Company allows existing instant A2A payment infrastructures to be used in new ways, with its payment apps evolving and extending over time. Customers are able to use any of their eligible bank accounts to pay instantly, securely and with ease.
Supporting banks in their Wero implementation
This momentum is reinforced by Europe’s evolving regulatory framework. With PSD3, PSR and IPR, the EU is creating a harmonized, secure and innovation-friendly environment. Yet, fragmentation and legacy systems still challenge many institutions in their Wero deployment.
In Luxembourg, several banks have started their transition to Wero with the support of LUXHUB, a connectivity specialist with deep experience in payment-related projects. LUXHUB has a comprehensive understanding of EPI documentation and of the required deployment efforts on all use cases. Based on its SaaS platform, LUXHUB orchestrates SCA, consent and payment flows between EPI Company and banks’ core systems.
