WERO Integration LAYER

Supporting banks with the implementation of Wero

Integrating Wero is a strategic project for banks seeking to offer new, innovative means of payment to consumers. But fragmentation infrastructures and legacy systems can make integration complex, time-consuming and costly.

To facilitate the implementation of Wero, LUXHUB provides banks with a SaaS platform orchestrating SCA, consent and payment flows between EPI Company and banks’ core systems. Based on its expertise gained with several banks, LUXHUB  can guide new adopters throughout their journey.

LUXHUB’S WERO Integration LAYER

A mutualized and scalable intermediate platform for banks to enable EPI Company’s payment system and deploy Wero

The solution provided by LUXHUB – acting as Technical Service Provider – includes all technical exchanges from and to EPI Company, and leverages existing or modified banks’ interfaces. For banks, this means:

  • Mutualized technical investments to expose and consume interfaces with EPI Company
  • Reduced rollout time of the Wero wallet
  • Future-proofed from technical changes required for the evolution of Wero

Banks have selected LUXHUB to take care of the integration and to build only one interface between LUXHUB and Wero. By doing so, all the banks will be connected and there will be a direct connection between Wero and the back-office systems of the five [Luxembourg] banks. This arrangement reduces the technical burden on banks. It reduces the effort on the bank side to spend time, effort and resources on the integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wero is a pan-European digital payment wallet developed and operated by EPI Company (European Payments Initiative). It enables consumers to make instant person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments directly from their bank account via a mobile application, without the need for card networks. Wero is designed as a European alternative to global payment schemes, providing a Made-in-Europe instant payment solution built on the SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst) infrastructure.

LUXHUB’s Wero Integration Layer is a SaaS-based intermediary platform that orchestrates all the payment flows between EPI Company’s Wero infrastructure and issuing banks’ core banking systems. Acting as a Technical Service Provider (TSP), LUXHUB manages all technical exchanges between EPI Company and the bank, enabling banks to offer Wero to their customers without individually building and maintaining a direct integration with EPI’s systems.

Integrating Wero requires banks to connect their core banking systems and to comply with EPI Company’s technical specifications: a project complicated by fragmented banking infrastructure, legacy systems, large amount of documentation and tight deployment timelines. LUXHUB simplifies this by providing a mutualized integration platform that handles all technical exchanges with EPI Company through a single interface. Banks connect once to LUXHUB and gain full Wero capability, with LUXHUB managing protocol updates, EPI changes, and ongoing technical evolution on their behalf.

LUXHUB’s mutualized Wero integration model delivers three core benefits: it reduces technical investment by sharing the cost of building and maintaining the EPI Company interface across multiple participating banks; it accelerates time-to-market for Wero wallet deployment, as banks leverage LUXHUB’s pre-built integration rather than building from scratch; and it future-proofs the integration against technical changes required by EPI Company’s ongoing evolution of the Wero product, with LUXHUB absorbing and implementing updates centrally.

LUXHUB has been selected by multiple Luxembourg banks to manage their Wero wallet integration with EPI Company. As confirmed by Ralf Hamal, EPI Company’s Country Relationship Management Lead for Belgium and Luxembourg, banks have chosen LUXHUB to build one common interface between LUXHUB and Wero, allowing all participating Luxembourg banks to connect to Wero and their back-office systems through a single shared arrangement. This directly reduces the technical burden on individual banks.

Wero was initially launched in France and Germany, where EPI Company’s bank shareholders are headquartered, and has been progressively expanded to BelgiumNetherlands and Luxembourg. LUXHUB is actively supporting the deployment of Wero in Luxembourg. As EPI Company expands Wero’s geographic reach across the SEPA zone, LUXHUB’s Wero Integration Layer is designed to scale with new market rollouts — providing a consistent technical platform for banks across multiple countries to connect to the Wero scheme.

Wero is built on the SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst) scheme, meaning every Wero payment is processed as a SEPA Instant Credit Transfer. This positions Wero as a consumer-friendly front-end on top of the underlying SCT Inst payment rail. The Instant Payments Regulation mandates that EU PSPs offer instant euro payment services, and Wero is one of the key instruments driving consumer adoption of instant payments. Banks deploying Wero simultaneously advance their IPR compliance and their customer digital payment proposition.

Yes. While LUXHUB has initially focused on the Luxembourg market for Wero integration  where its four founding shareholder banks and additional market participants are deploying the wallet. LUXHUB’s Wero Integration Layer is technically a scalable SaaS platform that can be offered to banks in other countries where Wero is available. Banks in Belgium and other future Wero expansion markets can engage LUXHUB to leverage the same mutualized integration infrastructure used by Luxembourg’s financial institutions.

LUXHUB provides continuous technical support and platform management post-Wero go-live. As EPI Company evolves the Wero product, introducing new features, updating technical specifications, or expanding to new payment flows. LUXHUB centrally implements these changes in its Integration Layer and deploys updates to all connected banks simultaneously. This means banks avoid the continuous effort of tracking and implementing EPI technical changes individually, while benefiting from LUXHUB’s close relationship with EPI Company as an established Technical Service Provider.

Wero offers bank customers several advantages over card-based payments: payments are processed in real time (instant settlement), directly from the payer’s bank account to the payee’s bank account, eliminating card network intermediaries and associated fees. Wero is accessible within familiar mobile banking apps, providing a seamless user experience. For P2P payments, Wero removes the need to share card details, only a mobile number or email addresses typically required, enhancing both convenience and security.

EPI Company’s strategic goal with Wero is to establish a sovereign European digital payment solution that reduces European dependency on non-European card networks and payment platforms (such as Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal) for day-to-day transactions. By building Wero on the SEPA Instant Credit Transfer infrastructure and expanding it across the Eurozone, EPI Company aims to create a single, interoperable pan-European instant payment wallet that competes with global digital wallets while keeping payment data and flows within European regulatory jurisdiction.

Banks interested in deploying the Wero wallet through LUXHUB’s Integration Layer can initiate the conversation by contacting LUXHUB via the dedicated form, emailing info@luxhub.com, or calling +352 288 076. LUXHUB’s team will assess your existing infrastructure, outline the integration architecture, provide timeline estimates based on experience gained with multiple banks, and guide you through the EPI Company onboarding requirements. LUXHUB can also support banks in selecting the most efficient integration path based on their core banking environment.
