LUXHUB supports the integration of the Wero wallet in Luxembourg
The arrival of EPI (European Payments Initiative) and its digital payment wallet Wero in Luxembourg was announced last year. This communication revolved around the onboarding of five major banks in Luxembourg, namely Spuerkeess, BIL, POST Luxembourg, Banque Raiffeisen, and BGL BNP Paribas: the banks will, by mid-2026, offer to their clients an additional mobile wallet and instant account-to-account payment solution. These banks have already started their respective implementation project, with the support of LUXHUB.
A mutualization and connectivity expert, born in the wake of PSD2, LUXHUB is a long-time partner of the five banks mentioned above. The Regtech/Fintech was selected by these major banks to support the development of Wero in Luxembourg, and to smoothen the transition from Payconiq, which is currently being used by numerous merchants and shops in Luxembourg.
Building a Wero Integration Layer
Over the past year, the LUXHUB team has worked on developing a Wero Integration Layer (WIL) aiming at facilitating the banks’ implementation of this new payment method. It solves their main challenges as it supports various payment flows, offers a common technical solution, and also supports wider post-payment activities’ scope.
In this respect, LUXHUB acts as a TSP, or Technical Service Provider, and its solution includes all technical exchanges to be setup from and to EPI on the issuing side, leverages existing or modified banks interfaces.
“The Wero Integration Layer therefore consists in a mutualized and scalable intermediate platform for banks, to enable EPI’s payment system”, states Ramzi Dziri, Head of Product, LUXHUB. For banks, this means:
- Reuse their past investments relating to PSD2 connectivity
- Mutualized technical investments to expose and consume interfaces with EPI
- Reduced rollout time of Wero to consumers
- Participants hedged from functional and technical changes required for Wero’s evolution
A seamless – cross-border – payment method
Based on instant account-to-account payments, Wero further streamlines payments in Europe by eliminating intermediaries in the payment chain and the associated additional costs.
As highlighted in the press release published earlier this year, the official launch of Wero in Luxembourg is targeted for mid-2026, with the migration from Payconiq to be finalized by the end of September 2026. The banks’ clients will then have access to the service provided by EPI, via the new Wero standalone app. It will enable them to make instant account-to-account payments, within Luxembourg, but also across borders, with Belgium, France and Germany. As underlined in EPI’s communication, “this roll-out is a great milestone on EPI’s journey to make sovereignty in payments for all Europeans a reality, with Luxembourg being the flagship of European cross-border needs (with an international workforce representing nearly 50% of the overall one, according to STATEC)”.
“Luxembourg offers an ideal environment to deploy our innovative payment solution Wero. With its advanced financial infrastructure, strong digital adoption, supportive regulatory framework and central position in Europe, it serves as a strategic gateway for us to scale our innovative cross-border instant payment services […]. I’m confident that the roll-out of Wero will be seamless and impactful to bring our promise to reality,” says Martina Weimert, CEO of the European Payments Initiative (EPI).
“LUXHUB’s Wero Integration Layer is proof that, once again, LUXHUB excels in connecting financial institutions, and helps them mutualize their implementation time for complex projects as well as enabling them to save costs and resources,” Claude Meurisse, CEO, LUXHUB.
